A $14 million technological upgrade was completed in 2020, after two years in the works. The implosion was on Jan. 11, 2006, nearly two years after the property had closed. It was the sixth and final Las Vegas hotel and casino implosion of the 1990s. The first MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, also a Kerkorian property, opened in 1973 with 2,084 rooms.
