In 2016, Carnival made cosmetic changes and changed the EA Sports Bar over to the Skybox Sports Bar. In 2018, more cosmetic changes were made and retail space expanded. More recently, in 2021, additional cosmetic changes were made, but the biggest change was redesigning the ship’s hull art.

The decor incorporates light green hues and light woods, for a fresh airy feel. Carnival Sunshine's Porthole staterooms give you the classic seafarer's view times two - a pair of round windows providing an affordable view of the ocean. If you tire of ocean-gazing, there's plenty more to do onboard, but 24-hour room service is one amenity you can enjoy as you continue to take in the view. Aft-View Extended Balcony staterooms feature a larger balcony for more lounge-around room, more kick-back spaceÂ… not to even mention some of the best stern-side views you'll find anywhere.

Every time I walked through, it was buzzing with activity (although, as previously mentioned, I didn't spend a lot of time there). The venue is a maze of slot machines, with a collection of poker tables, a craps table, two roulette tables and several blackjack tables. Throughout our cruise, the casino hosted organized poker tournaments, raffles and other ways to test Lady Luck. The Havana Bar is the place to head for top-notch mojitos. The small buffet area by the bar often features Latin-inspired bites like empanadas and Cuban sandwiches. Since it's located just beyond the main pool on Deck 9 and beside the Lido Marketplace buffet area, I found it to be an ideal spot to retreat to when buffet area seating was limited.

Carnival Sunshine activities
They're designed with marble-topped surfaces, full bathrooms with double-width shower-whirlpool tub combos, bidets, double sinks, marble flooring and mosaic tiles on the walls. Other in-cabin amenities include a safe, robes, a phone and a hair dryer (hidden away in a drawer by the vanity). The ship's higher-category cabins and suites have mini-bars. The world’s largest cruise line—and one of the most widely recognized—originated its “Fun Ship” concept in 1972 and has been launching party-packed superliners with signature red funnels ever since.

I ordered the shrimp dumplings, sweet and sour shrimp, and the Chinese broccoli. We closed out our dinner with the rose creme brulee with ginger cream and caramelized crepes served with citrus ice cream. Also on the Lido Deck, BlueIguana Cantina serves freshly made burritos, tacos and bowls. It's one of my favorite casual dining spots, and I would put the veggie burrito up against Chipotle any day of the week. The suites come with varied perks, which can include priority check-in and boarding, as well as priority disembarkation on the final morning of your trip. Spa lovers can stay in one of the 92 Cloud 9 Spa cabins and three spa suites with direct access to the spa.
Numerous ocean-view and inside stateroom categories have connecting doors and are suitable for families. When originally launched as Carnival Destiny, Carnival Sunshine was the lead ship for Carnival’s Destiny class. However, when Carnival Destiny was rebranded as Carnival Sunshine in 2013, it took over as the lead ship for the new Sunshine class. Sister ships include similarly refurbished and renamed ships, the current Carnival Radiance and Carnival Sunrise.
When Carnival Destiny became Carnival Sunshine (along with the transformation of all of its sister ships), it was a big deal. However, that wasn’t the ship’s first major refurbishment. It also received a multimillion-dollar refit in 2005, when the ship was nearly ten years old, that upgraded its public spaces.
The line’s ever-growing fleet features entertainment and activities designed for passengers of all ages, from game shows and lip sync competitions to twisting waterslides and mini golf. These ships are a reliable choice for families as well as young singles and couples who want a vacation that won’t break the bank. The typical ocean-view rooms offer slightly larger, rectangular windows (and just a larger amount of space in the stateroom overall).
Basically, think of Ocean Plaza as an indoor entertainment spot that plays host to live music events, plus trivia, dance classes, games and more. And while all that’s going on, it never leaves you far from all the sunny, breezy goodness you get from the great outdoors of the sea. Oh, and when nature’s all done sunning you for the day, it transforms into a night spot that’s seriously stunning.
All of the above considered, you can expect a refreshed, modern feel on this Carnival ship, similar to what you might find on younger Carnival vessels. Carnival Destiny, built in Italy in the early 1990s at the cost of $400 million, was the lead ship of Carnival’s Destiny class. Other Destiny-class ships to come later included Carnival Triumph and Carnival Victory. Don’t worry — that’s because all of them were renamed when the Destiny class was rechristened the Sunshine class, and all of the ships received new names and new looks. What you come away with is the distinct feeling that there has been a quiet revolution going on, with a triumph of style over tack. In fact, there are certain areas of the ship, such as the Library Bar, Java Blue, Havana Bar, Fahrenheit 555 and Ji Ji, where you'd be hard pressed to tell this was even a Carnival ship.
